What is GAPS™?
GAPS stands for a condition called Gut And PsychologySyndrome™ created by neurologist and human nutritionist Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD. While working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychological conditions, Dr. Campbell-McBride established a link between the function of our digestive system and the brain.
“The belief is that toxins from bad bacteria in the gut, created by undigested foods, can severely affect brain function. And by healing the gut, you heal diseases."
What is the GAPS™ Diet?
After discovering the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet), which was developed by Dr. Sidney Haas MD and detailed by Elaine Gottschall in Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health through Diet, Dr. Campbell-McBride took the SCD a step further by describing the gut-brain connection in her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome™. She emphasizes the importance of:
~detoxifying the intestinal tract
~healing the gut through nutrient-dense foods
~sealing or protecting the gut by establishing healthy levels of beneficial bacteria
Is GAPS for you?
The GAPS™ Diet protocol is for those people who want to support their body in its own natural healing.
Many parents find their way to GAPS on behalf of their child – unexplained sickness, developmental delays, behavior and emotional issues, learning issues, or health concerns such as those listed below. While it may seem unbelievable that neurological disorders like autism can be diminished or even addressed through dietary changes, families that have been dissatisfied by currently available treatments have flocked to the GAPS diet, and many have experienced recovery.
Many adults on GAPS got unsatisfactory answers to what was amiss with their health. When prescription drugs (which can mask symptoms) were not enough, they went looking for better answers . . .
